CARE & REPAIR

How to care for your knitwear

Wool is a remarkable natural fibre, and with the right care, it can stay beautiful for many years.

One of its greatest qualities is that it rarely needs to be washed as often as other materials. In many cases, simply airing your knitwear between wears is enough to refresh it and preserve its natural softness and character.

A GENTLER APPROACH

Caring for GRAU

Caring for your GRAU pieces is less about frequent washing and more about treating the fibres gently. Small habits can make a significant difference to how your knitwear looks, feels, and wears over time.

Air first

Fresh air is often all wool needs between wears.

Wash gently

Use a wool programme and a detergent made for wool.

Dry flat

Reshape while damp and allow your knitwear to dry naturally.

Fold to store

Keep knitwear folded in a cool, dry place rather than hanging it.

01

Washing

When washing is needed, choose a gentle wool programme at a low temperature and use a detergent specifically developed for wool. Avoid unnecessary heat, vigorous spinning, and harsh detergents, as these can affect the natural fibres and alter the shape and feel of the garment.

For hand washing, use lukewarm water and handle the knitwear gently. Avoid soaking, rubbing, or wringing the fabric. Instead, carefully press out excess water and roll the garment in a clean towel to absorb any remaining moisture.

Whenever possible, consider airing or spot-cleaning your knitwear before choosing a full wash.

02

Drying

Wool deserves a little patience when drying.

Avoid tumble drying, as heat and friction can cause natural fibres to shrink, felt, or lose their original shape. Instead, gently reshape the garment while damp and allow it to dry naturally.

For heavier knitwear, we recommend drying it flat. This helps protect the shape of the piece and prevents the weight of the wet wool from stretching the garment.

03

Storage

The way you store your knitwear matters too.

Fold your GRAU pieces and keep them in a cool, dry place rather than leaving them on hangers for long periods, as knitted garments can gradually stretch under their own weight.

When storing knitwear between seasons, make sure each piece is clean and completely dry before putting it away. For longer periods of storage, a closed garment bag or storage box can also help protect your wool from dust and moths.

04

Repair, rather than replace

A loose thread, a small hole, or signs of wear do not necessarily mean the end of a favourite piece. Simple repairs can extend the life of knitwear considerably while preserving the character it develops through wear.

We believe beautiful pieces deserve to be cared for, repaired, and enjoyed for as long as possible.

Made for the long run…

Caring becomes part of the story

Treat your GRAU knitwear well and it will return the favour — keeping its soft feel and becoming more personal and more familiar with every wear.
